Mother and son, Laura and Dash, have more than their striking blonde hair in common – they’re bound by a shared passion for makeup and manicures. Dash says their love is unique because they hang out like best friends. Laura understands that some parents might be nervous about having a child that pushes the boundaries of gender, but she celebrates Dash’s right to be an individual.

Dash, tell us about the nails you chose today.

Dash: I chose flames because I’m spicy.

What is love?

Laura: Love, for me, is my family, my home, my boys - I’ve got three sons and Dash is my middle boy - so I would say that is love.
Dash: Mine’s my Xbox.

What would a mum and son date night look like for you both?

Laura: A date day would be shopping, nails…
Dash: 5-star restaurants.
Laura: Something dressy that we could glam up for. That would be our ideal date, wouldn’t it?
Dash: Yeah.

Do you ever argue?

Laura: Dash is very dramatic, he's argumentative and he is stubborn. So really we do argue and we knock heads, don’t we? And I go absolutely ballistic when he uses my makeup and gets it on the carpet.

Why is your love unique?

Dash: Our love is unique because we hang out together the most out of our family.
Laura: Our love is unique because I let him be whoever he wants to be. The fact that he is a little boy and he loves wearing makeup and having his nails done and all those little things that people usually think a little girl would be doing and I love that about him. All that stuff. I love it so much.
