Project Hearts not Hate

Sephora is donating to several other non-profits to empower communities with tools, and support those experiencing exclusion or hate based on their appearance. 

Appearance-based hate is exclusion, bullying, or hate because of how someone looks. It can be based on anything from hair texture, ethnicity, makeup, expression of culture, scars, visible disability, body type, gender expression, skin colour, the accessories you choose to wear, your clothes, or all of those things mixed together. 

This kind of hate can make us feel shame, fear, and a loss of confidence or even anxiety, depression, and result in trauma responses. It creates unfair healthcare costs, productivity losses at work. Because of appearance based hate, some don’t participate in social events, or fear being in public. 

At the community level, people feel less safe, they’re afraid to express themselves, and it affects their quality of life. It shows up in unfair beauty standards that hurt us all. (Source: Right To Be) 

At Sephora, our mission is to champion a world of inspiration and inclusion where everyone can celebrate their beauty. As a global leader in prestige beauty retail, we recognize that a major barrier to everyone celebrating their beauty is appearance- based hate. 

In collaboration with NGOs, research institute Ipsos BVA and experts, we have designed Project Hearts not Hate, to tackle appearance-based hate; our long-term commitment to create awareness, education and deliver tangible support everywhere we operate.

Sephora Collection is more than our own brand. It's the expression of our belief that beauty belongs to everyone. Guided by our mission to celebrate our favourite kind of beauty: yours; Sephora Collection was a natural choice to launch Project Hearts not Hate with and help create a world where every form of beauty is seen, respected and celebrated. 

The donation will be used to fund training using the Sephora H.E.A.R.T.S. training that was developed with non-profit partner, Right To Be. The training will explain what appearance-based hate is and its impact.

Learners will also receive knowledge on how to prevent, intervene, and follow up when someone experiences hate because of how they look. In 2027, the Sephora H.E.A.R.T.S. training will be available for those who would like to learn more about being a better ally. 

Right To Be is a US-based nonprofit organization with global reach. Their mission is to build a world free of hate and harassment and filled with humanity. A recognized leader in anti-hate and anti-harassment 

education, Right To Be has trained over 5 million people across 40+ 

countries and 20+ languages, delivering impact at scale. Their programs 

drive real change, with 76% of participants intervening when witnessing harassment and 98% recommending the training.

Every day, millions of people around the world experience hate, bullying, and exclusion because of their age, gender, skin tone, body type, visible disability or how they chose to express themselves.

That's why this year, in Europe, on October 9-10, we’re making a donation for every Sephora Collection product sold, to non-profit Right To Be.

Right To Be is a non-profit organization with the mission to build a world free of hate and harassment. For the past two decades they have educated people on how to be better allies and support those who have experienced hate. 

This is just the beginning. Project Hearts not Hate is our global commitment to a future where everyone's beauty is seen, respected, and celebrated.
